I make a blog about writely.com last december and recently Google bought the online word processing program to continue its fight against Microsoft.
Quote The acquisition of Upstartle, disclosed Thursday on Google's Web site, continues the Mountain View, California-based company's effort to assemble a suite of software applications that are tethered to an Internet connection instead of a single computer's hard drive.
Google didn't reveal how much it paid for Upstartle. In an analyst presentation last week, Google said it has been aggressively buying high-tech startups to deepen its product line as well as its pool of engineering talent.
Both internet giants has been competing with each other with both moving cross from each other's boundary. My think Google has the big advantage being starting out as the Internet company and the future is towards web application and will left Microsoft only dominant in the desktop operating system. Microsoft should take Writely up before Google does and it is a big mistake that will cost Microsoft in the long run. Watch out for the next online Spreadsheet system.

Quote President George W. Bush on Friday defended job outsourcing to India during a whistlestop tour of an Indian technology city as Muslims clashed with Hindus and police in protests against his visit.
Bush's five-hour trip to the southern city of Hyderabad came a day after he sealed a landmark civilian atomic cooperation deal with New Delhi that recognizes India's status as a responsible nuclear power.
"People do lose jobs as a result of globalization. And it's painful for those who lose jobs," Bush told an entrepreneur during a discussion at Hyderabad's Indian School of Business.
The United States would counter it by educating people to acquire the skills needed for jobs emerging in the 21st century rather than discouraging outsourcing, he said.
...
Though:
- The americans feels betrayed with the statement. Many still unemployed in the states and outsourcing to India simply means choosing cheap labour. Most of the tech companies outsrouce their customor service to the 3rd world countries but their services is certainly not to the par. Most of the time is caused by the difficulty of communication between the parties involved....

Quote A federal judge has ruled that portions of Google's popular image search feature, which displays small thumbnail versions of images found on other Web sites, likely violate U.S. copyright law.
U.S. District Judge A. Howard Matz ruled Friday that Perfect 10, an adult-oriented Web site featuring "beautiful natural women" in the nude, has shown that Google image search probably infringes copyright law "by creating and displaying thumbnail copies of its photographs."
The Los Angeles judge said he would award Perfect 10 a preliminary injunction against Google, and gave lawyers for both sides until March 8 to propose the injunction's wording.
Everyone is trying to cash in form those rich companies and I think we will see more scenario like this just like Microsoft is. Nobody willingly to take the step to sue them if they are minicule company. If Perfect 10 win that means Google can close up the image search functionality, afterall all images on the internet are copyright to the owner of the website.
Quote Google is facing a growing number of lawsuits that could imperil its lucrative business model, which relies in part on the ability to make "fair use" of copyright works and sell advertisements linked to trademarked keywords.
The Authors Guild sued Google in September, claiming that the Google Print Library Project violated copyright law. The Agence France Press news agency also sued Google for allegedly using photos and headlines in violation of the law.
Google won a case against Geico after a judge ruled that selling ads linked to trademarks was legal, but lost one in France. A federal judge in Nevada ruled last month (click here for PDF) that Google's cache feature is "fair use" of even copyright works.

Quote Dell and Google are evaluating a partnership in which the Google Toolbar, Google Desktop Search and a Google-designed Dell home page are included on new Dell PCs, a Dell representative confirmed.
..... The browser, not the desktop, has become the most sought-after piece of real estate on a new PC, said Roger Kay, president of Endpoint Technologies Associates. Five years ago, PC companies were giddy over the prospect of renting space on their boxes' desktops to the highest bidder, after Microsoft's antitrust settlement with the U.S. Justice Department forced it to open up the Windows desktop to increased competition.

I can see that finally the Internet is reaching its maturity. Everyone was experimenting with its capabilities when Internet was still at its infancy, which leads to the dot com crash a few years later. After a few more years of scrambling it seems that the Internet is slowly finding its place.
It is proven that a website can be much more than just a information portal. Thus the new order, "Web 2.0", has arised. From Wikipedia, it simply means the second phase of World Wide Web development, but the major key item in Web 2.0 is
Quote the transition of websites from isolated information silos to sources of content and functionality, thus becoming a computing platform serving web applications to end users
Web application could be the key-word marking the end of Microsoft dominance in the IT industry. The technology has spurred the discussion of Web-based Microsoft Office replacements, for example Writely, an online word processor. In a more distant future ahead, Windows will loose its dominance in the OS market as Web Application only require a browser. Without dependency on Microsoft's product, their future looks dim. Of cause Microsoft will still be the key player in the IT industry but their new release of Windows will not make such a stir like it used to be in the future.
